PRESS: Russian ministry wants state control imposed on Web traffic
MOSCOW, Feb 11 (PRIME) – The communications ministry has prepared a bill on state control over the flow of traffic in Russia, business daily Vedomosti reported Thursday, referring to a number of sources.
The document describes several ways of how the government may track routes of Internet traffic on connection networks.
The ministry offers to create a state system to monitor the use of resources of global addressing and global identification in Internet. It will survey the work of critical infrastructure of the Runet, the Russian-speaking segment of the Internet. A Runet register will be also designed.
An unnamed federal official told the daily that the proposed measures will help the government understand how the domestic Internet functions. There is no such understanding at present, because Runet’s structure is complicated due to chaotic evolution, he said.
The ministry also suggests putting foreign channels of connection and points of traffic exchange under tougher control.
